Recently Added Features
- Nurses can now specify alternate administration times for selected orders.
This is especially useful in resolving administration-time conflicts between two
or more orders, improving nurse workflow and productivity, and minimizing pharmacist
time managing nursing requests for administration schedule changes.
- Ascend-eMAR now lets you add patient allergies
- Ascend-eMAR now allows you to view and print Patient Education Monographs
- Nurses and doctors can now print a "Continuum of Care" report which allows doctors
to specify which medications should be continued for their patients. This
report can be used when a patient is transferred in or out of ICU, after the patient
returns from surgery, and whenever hospital policy requires that all orders be rewritten.
- Hann's On Software now provides initial (basic) eMAR training via pre-recorded,
multi-media sessions which are available on our website. (See the "Demo" sub-menu
located under the [Products]-->[Electronic MAR] menus )
General Information
The Ascend Electronic Medication Administration Record (Ascend-eMAR) provides nurses
and other healthcare professionals with everything that a traditional printed medication
administration record (MAR) offers, and much more. Ascend-eMAR provides a paperless,
electronic medication administration record and MAR history, making it easy to manage,
document and review patient medication use.
Benefits to Nurses
-
You'll never have to rewrite another MAR, or wait for a new computer-generated MAR
to be printed.
-
You don't have to double-check orders on the Ascend-eMAR every day...once an order
is checked, its checked!
-
The Ascend-eMAR program provides you with a portable medication
profile (MAR). including previous medication history and future scheduled doses.
-
Your eMAR provides access to ALL of your patient's MAR's. You can choose to
limit your view to just "your" patients, or view other patients on your unit (i.e.,
if you are covering for someone else...at lunch etc).
-
You won't have to search for your patient's chart, or wait in line for someone to
finish with it.
-
Ascend-eMAR automatically maintains MAR documentation while doses are administered.
You don't have to go back to the medical record to enter this documentation, saving
you lots of time!
-
You'll save time and paperwork because eMAR can capture charges for you...No more
floor stock forms or stickers!
-
The program can improve the timeliness of information about changed, discontinued
and new orders.
-
Ascend-eMAR watches your back! It reminds you about overdue doses, or ones
that are about to be given too early... and if you enter an order into eMAR, the
program can warn you about problems such as drug allergies, interactions, duplicate
therapies, and etc.
-
Medication information is at your fingertips...in English and Spanish! Easier
for you, and your patients.
Benefits to Pharmacists
-
Charging from, and/or reconciliation with, paper MARs can be eliminated, saving
you lots of time
-
Charging for floor stock usage (i.e., via forms, slips, stickers, etc) can be eliminated
-
Charging from pharmacy profiles and charging on dispensing can be reduced or eliminated
-
Paper-based charge forms can be eliminated from drug distribution and floor stock
maintenance procedures.
-
Order entered by nurses (using eMAR) can be verified and edited by a pharmacist
(using Ascend-IP)
-
Order modifications by nurses result in a clear audit trail and pharmacy verification
path.
-
The Ascend-eMAR program can be easily configured to work with automated dispensing/profiling
systems such as Pyxis, Omnicell and medDispense, even if only certain areas of the
hospital use them.
-
The program can also be used from a remote location (e.g., during patient rounds,
during P&T and medical staff meetings, from a pharmacist's home, and the like.)
Benefits to Doctors
-
The Ascend-eMAR program provides doctors with a portable medication
profile, including medication history, so they won't have to search for their patient's
chart, or wait for someone to finish with it.
-
The program can be used from a physician's office, saving them time and providing
them with a valuable service.
-
The Ascend-eMAR "Continuum of Care" report makes it easy for doctors to document
their review of patients home medications and inpatient medications on admission,
and at discharge.
Benefits to Patient Safety
Benefits to the Hospital
- Ascend-eMAR helps the hospital satisfy patient safety and regulatory
requirements
- The program helps retain and attract nurses, doctors and pharmacists
who insist on modern, improved healthcare information technology, and improved patient
safety
- Ascend-eMAR can improve charge accuracy and dramatically reduce staff
time spent on billing-related activities.
- The program helps minimize medication charge/usage discrepancies
between the patient's bill and the medical record that otherwise often appear during
audits.
- The program can be used from a physician's office, saving them time and providing
physicians with a valuable service that you can market to them.
Benefits to Information Technology
- Ascend-eMAR is browser-based (IEv6) and uses a Windows XP/2003/2000 platform with
Internet Information Services (IIS). This makes setup, roll-out and administration
of the program a breeze for IT.
- The program operates on personal computers, laptops, and tablet PCs, and over mixed
wired/wireless networks.
- Ascend-eMAR can also be used with Terminal Services/Citrix platforms if desired.
- Ascend-eMAR shares the same SQL database (v2003, v2000, v7) as Ascend-IP.
Therefore, no interfaces are needed to work with our pharmacy software!
- Ascend-eMAR can operate with SSL to ensure your data transmissions are encrypted.
- Ascend-eMAR provides application-level user authentication, role assignments, and
access controls for menus, functions, hospital locations/units and patients.
- Installation of the program is automated, and available through our website. Typical
installations only take about 10 to 20 minutes.
- Program updates can be performed from within the application and are directly transferred
from the HOS website to your server. This makes it quick and easy for hospital
IT to manage the program.
Features
- Familiarity: Hann's On Software (HOS) designed the Ascend-eMAR
to look very similar to printed MARs. This makes it easy for new and per diem employees
to quickly become comfortable using the program.
- The Ascend-eMAR helps you focus on high
priority orders (e.g., late doses, scheduled doses that are due soon, etc.)
by grouping them on a summary screen.
- You can quickly toggle between a "high priority orders" screen, and your patient's
full MAR.
- Clear and easy to understand: Ascend-eMAR
clearly shows doses that were given vs.
not-given, the time each dose was scheduled and was actually given, and
identifies the nurse. For example, scheduled doses to be administered are clearly
displayed in green. Doses that are documented as "not given" are circled in red.
- Drop-down lists make it fast and
easy for you to document “reasons not given”, “reasons given”, “pain assessment
levels”, “effectiveness ratings” and the like, for each dose. These lists also help
to minimize the "keying in" of data. You can create as many such lists as you need.
- Sliding scale or variable doses (e.g.,
Insulin), with corresponding measurement values (e.g., blood sugar), can be
easily documented together on one screen. Create your own list of measurements
(e.g., blood pressure, pulse, temperature, etc.) to streamline documentation procedures.
Notes can also be entered for each dose if additional space is needed.
- Ascend-eMAR will soon be able to read bar-codes to verify the correct patient, drug, route, and dose, and to alert
you of the correct vs. incorrect administration time.
- Quickly locate patients: You can click on
the patient's room-bed displayed on the screen to see a listing of patients in adjacent
beds. This makes it easy for you to find your next patient's MAR.
- Search flexibility: you can search for patients
by name, room-bed and by patient account number.
- Flexible settings: you can view the MAR and MAR
history for any time period (i.e., you can look forward or backward in time).
You can reset the MAR on the fly to display any number of days, time periods, columns,
and etc. For example, you could create a 5 day MAR with 5 columns then switch to
a one-day MAR with three shift columns in just seconds.
- Filter options: You can quickly reconfigure your Ascend-eMAR
to display just what you want to see (e.g., show all orders, show scheduled orders
only, include DC'd orders, display all patients, include discharged patients or
not, and much more).
- Order entry: You can enter orders when needed (e.g., for
"stats" and new orders). These orders can be displayed in the pharmacy software
(Ascend-IP) to be verified by a pharmacist.
- Verify new orders: Reminders for new orders entered
by pharmacy (and not checked by a nurse) are clearly displayed. After you "accept"
the order, the reminder disappears.
- Double check: You can have a second nurse "initial" certain
orders if a double-check is required by hospital policy (e.g., Insulin doses)
- Charge options: administration of medications can simultaneously
charge the doses in the Ascend pharmacy software if you wish.
- You have "real-time" information at your fingertips
(e.g., new orders, DC'd orders, changes in patient data, etc.).
- Ascend-eMAR can provide real-time usage/billing information to the pharmacy as doses
are administered by nurses.
Technical Data
- The Ascend-eMAR shares a SQL database with the
Ascend-IP pharmacy system thereby eliminating any need for an interface program.
Furthermore, no additional databases or significant data building is required.
- Ascend-eMAR uses widely-available, standard PC/Laptop/Tablet
and Windows platforms and can operate on mixed wireless and/or wired networks. For
example, you could use a desktop computer at the unit station and a
mobile, wireless tablet PC or laptop while moving from room to room.
- Ascend-eMAR is "web-based" and therefore only requires Internet
Explorer to be installed on your PCs. This makes it easy to
roll-out and manage. Other than the web-server, there are no workstation-related
program installations or updates.
