How To Update Ascend-HI

Please read through these instructions before starting the update. We can assist you during our regular business hours (8AM to 5PM PST).

Updating the Ascend-HI software involves two updates: updating the server software and updating the client software. All updates are downloaded from the Hann's On Software website (http://www.hosinc.com) and can be downloaded and installed from within the Ascend-HI application. New software updates are typically posted on the website about once a month. These updates include software enhancements, fixes, new reports and labels, First Databank clinical data and table updates.

NOTE: In environments where workstation/user privileges are locked down and users cannot install updates, a local Admin/Power user will need to download and install the updates.

Updating The Server

The update is packaged into a single update file named Update.EXE. This file is posted on the website and will need to be downloaded and saved in the \Ascend-HI\Updates folder on the Ascend-HI server. There are two ways to download:

Step 1: Downloading The Update

Easiest:

From within the program, go to Utilities...Updates...Download Update and select Start Download. (NOTE: If you have not entered your user id and password for the Hann's On Software website, you will need to do so before you can download any updates from within the program.) This process will start the connection to the Hann's On Software website and begin downloading the update. Depending on the speed of your connection, this process may take a few minutes.

Step 2: Enter your website User Name and Password. Then select the type of update you want to perform.

  • Select "Update To the Latest Version" to download the most current release, along with the most current First Databank files.
  • Select "Update To the Latest Beta Version" if a Hann's On Software support technician instructed you to download the beta.

NOTE: To determine the date of the First Databank files currently installed into your database, follow the steps of:

1.your Ascend-HI program and navigate to UTILITIES/INVENTORY/INVENTORY in order to bring up the INVENTORY screen.
2. Click on the SEARCH button to activate the SEARCH screen.
3. In the title bar of the SEARCH screen, the current date is displayed.

Step 3: Click on "Start Download" and wait for the download to complete.

Step 4: Select "Yes" to unpack the update.

Step 5: The update will unpack in the \Update directory.

Step 6: You are now ready to run the server update. The server update will update your data tables, First Databank tables, label and reports and post a new client update on your server for distribution. Click on the text "Click here to update the server files" to begin updating the database.

Step 7: When the server update has completed, click "OK" to update the workstation files.

Updating The Workstation

After the server has been updating, there will be a new client update available. When a user logs into Ascend-HI, the program compares its version with the version of the \Ascend-HI\Updates\Ascend-HI.EXE file. If the local version is older than the one on the server, the program detects it needs to do a workstation update. IN ORDER TO PERFORM A WORKSTATION UPDATE, THE USER MUST BE ABLE TO REGISTER .DLL'S ON THE LOCAL MACHINE OR THE  WORKSTATION UPDATE WILL NOT INSTALL COMPLETELY! Usually this requires the user be at least a Power User. Otherwise a local Admin user will need to perform the workstation update in order for the update to complete successfully.

More technical stuff... When the program detects a new workstation update is available on the server, it will copy the \Ascend-HI\Updates\UpdateHI.EXE file to the client's Ascend-HI directory then run the UpdateHI.EXE. The UpdateHI.EXE will install the update on the local client and register the necessary drivers.

Step 8: The update will be complete and you can begin using the program.

Manually Performing An Update

If you want to apply the update by downloading from the website instead of updating from within the application, follow the following steps:

Step 1: Download the update (UPDATE.EXE) from the website and save it in the Ascend-HI\Update server folder. This is a self-extracting file that contains the update files. If you are downloading a beta version of the update, there are usually two beta versions posted on the website: Full and Thin. Both contain the same version of the program, but the Thin version does not contain the First Databank updates. So if you recently did an update and already have updated your First Databank files in the past 30 days, you are probably fine by downloading just the Thin version.

Step 2: Unpack the update from within the program by going to Utilities...Unpack Update. You can also manually unpack the UPDATE.EXE file by double-clicking it but make sure you are unpacking it in the Ascend-HI\Update folder on the server. By unpacking from within the program, it will unpack the file only if it is in the right folder.

Step 3: Run the server update. The server update should launch and you can start the server update to update data files, reports and First Databank tables. You can also manually launch the server update by copying the UPDATEHI.EXE file from the Ascend-HI\Update folder and copying it to the client's Ascend-HI directory (the same directory as where the application is running).

Step 4: Run the workstation update. After the server update runs, the last process is to update the workstation files. If you are running in Terminal Services or Citrix, you will need to make sure all users have exited the application since the ASCEND-HI.EXE will need to be replaced.

Once completed, the UPDATE.EXE is renamed to LAST UPDATE.EXE in the Ascend-HI\Update folder. If you need to run the update again, you can rename it back to UPDATE.EXE and start the process again.
