Privacy and Security
In general, HIPAA requires health care providers to protect
patient privacy, ensure the security of patient data, and to adopt standard billing
transactions and code sets. Providers will meet HIPAA rules primarily by adopting
new business practices, changing policies and procedures and providing appropriate
employee training. Although healthcare software products, such as Ascend-HI, cannot,
by themselves, make healthcare providers HIPAA compliant, they can make it easier
for providers to do so. For example, Ascend-HI, has enhanced the security model.
Every user is required to login with a name and password and we record every instance
of user access to patient data. The program can tell you which users accessed which
patients at anytime. Administrators can also set a timeout period so the program
automatically logs an inactive user out of the program. Security level is granted
on a screen level (full access, view access, or no access). In addition to our application
security model, users can extended their security needs by using Microsoft SQL Server’s
security model.
Standard Billing/Claim formats
Ascend-HI supports the NCPDP version 5.1 claim format
as required by HIPAA. AHI also supports these older NCPDP versions if you need them:
3A, 3B, 3C, 32, 40. Ascend-HI supports the HIPAA-required "ASC X12N" claim
format, and also continues to support older formats, such as NSF, should your payers
temporarily require it. These formats can be submitted to a clearinghouse such as
NDC and WebMd.
Standard Coding Sets
Ascend-HI contains the most current HCPCS codes available
from Medicare. Also, since we obtain MedicalCoding.Net's ICD-9 codes for you,
you can be sure you are using the proper diagnosis codes required by HIPAA.
We provide standard NDC codes from First Databank, and the program lets you maintain
current UPIN numbers for your doctors.
